It’s common knowledge that one of the most important cultural and educational undertakings of each country has always been the foundation of a university. And, in this regard, the Republic of Armenia is no exception. The first ‘university’ mentioned in the chronicles in the 14th century is Tatev, which is also one of the oldest universities in the world. At present, 90 institutes of higher education are functioning in the Republic of Armenia with the large majority located in capital city Yerevan.

Below is the list and brief description of the most important universities of Yerevan, which are highly appreciated by Armenian and foreign students alike. They are:

Yerevan State University


Yerevan State University (YSU) is the symbol of the educational system of the newly-independent Republic of Armenia and the country’s largest institution of higher education. YSU was established on May 16, 1919. At its founding, there was only one faculty in the university, the Faculty of History and Linguistics with 262 students. In the coming years the University’s faculties were developed and expanded, and now YSU offers programs in 28 fields with 77 specializations in natural sciences and humanities, as well as in traditional and contemporary studies.

Yerevan State University comes with full time programs, which differ according to specialization. Academic year in YSU is made up of two semesters, each approximately lasts 17-18 weeks and there is an exam period at the end of each semester. The University boasts a unique library, which is perhaps one of the largest libraries in Armenia. It has ten divisions and 12 reading rooms, which can accommodate 1,100 readers.

There are over 1,300 lecturers (200 with doctoral degrees and over 500 are Candidates of Sciences) and about 13,000 students in YSU. By now, there have been approximately ninety thousand graduates.

The founding of the YSU was a very important event in the history of Armenian people, which highly contributed to the establishment of a number of separate institutions of higher education in the areas of foreign languages, engineering, pedagogy, economics and medicine.

Yerevan State Medical University


Yerevan State Medical University (YSMU) is a highly reputed medical university in the world and one of the oldest medical universities of Armenia still considered to be the top educational institution in the region, offering academic programs at all levels; from undergraduate and graduate to post-graduate courses and post-doctoral studies.

Founded in 1919 as a medical faculty of Yerevan State University, YSMU was established in 1930 as a separate institution. Since 1989 the University has carried the name of Mkhitar Heratsi, the famous medieval doctor. The objective of the YSMU is to train qualified specialists in health care and valuable service in the development of Medical Science. YSMU also has great respect for the standards and practices of sister institutions of medicine worldwide and has a rich history concerning its activity in the international sphere.

The University has always put the emphasis on shaping intercultural communication with a global extension of education at the forefront. It’s included in the World Directory of Medical Schools and today boasts more than a thousand students from overseas, including 700 Indians.

The University employs around two thousand people on either full or part-time basis, of those 750 being teaching staff and 200 involved in research. There are 700 professors, 300 associate professors and 7 academicians in YSMU.

It’s worth mentioning that many graduates are working successfully in various prestigious hospitals in India, UK, USA and European countries. Only in California, USA over 500 university graduates carry out practical work.

Recently, the University has introduced ‘Guest Lectureship Program,’ inviting eminent doctors through the Ministry of Health from AIIMS, Maulana Azad Medical College, Lady Hardinge Medical College (Delhi), JIPMER (Pondicherry) and other best-known medical colleges and hospitals.

Yerevan State Linguistic University after V. Brusov


76-year-old YSLU is definitely one of the leading centers for linguistic education in the region and Armenia, the history of which started in 1935. With the mission to establish new ways of education, develop classical and new professions, the University, named after famous Russian writer Valeriy Brusov, who was an active translator of Armenian poetry, has become a preferred educational venue not only for Armenians but also for students from different corners of the world.

There are 3 faculties in the Yerevan State Linguistic University after V. Brusov: the Department of Linguistics and Intercultural Communication established in 2004; the Faculty of Russian Language, Literature and Foreign Languages; and the Department of Foreign Languages, which is the largest comprising nearly 2,000 students.  All three faculties aim to train experienced and competent specialists, knowledgeable in foreign languages, who would be competitive, both at home and international employment markets.

The YSLU staff consists of 477 members, including the instructing staff of 434 members, 189 members are on full-time position, 12 Doctors of Science, 15 Professors, 160 Candidates of Sciences and 93 Associate Professors. Currently, over 4,000 students study at the YSLU, specializing in different fields.

Throughout the whole period of its functioning the Institute had more than 50,000 graduates, specialists of the Russian, English, French, German, Italian, Spanish languages, practical psychology, history, political science and area studies.

The University has many partners in the international arena. Periodically, the compatibility of the educational and science-research results in the international arena is raised, expanding the existing international relations and improving their quality and efficiency.The education is provided with the information and materials of the foreign scientific schools and leading pedagogical and research experience.

The strengthening of international relations enables the University professors and students to be retrained abroad as well as to invite representatives from education and other fields of foreign countries.

American University of Armenia


Founded in 1991, the American University of Armenia (AUA) is a private, nonsectarian, independent University in Yerevan, which is the first Armenian institution modeled on Western-style higher education, committed to teaching, research and service.The University aims to prepare graduates, who will play a constructive role in the social and democratic style of government. The use of English as the language of instruction is intended to facilitate communication between graduates of AUA and their colleagues throughout the world and to attract an international faculty cadre and student body.

Currently, AUA offers instruction leading to a master’s degree in the following 8 fields of study: Business Administration, Systems Management, Industrial Engineering, Computer and Information Science, Public Health, Law and Political Science. In 2008, an ‘economics’ division was opened at the University.

Yerevan State Pedagogical University


Yerevan State Pedagogical University (YSPU) named after prominent Armenian pedagogue Khachatur Abovyan is an institutional academy in Armenia founded in 1922. It prepares teachers in twenty fields, doing all the best to put education in Armenia at higher levels. The university has its national emblem, anthem and flag.

The university trains teachers for the Republic of Armenia and the Diaspora. The majority of Armenian teachers (80 percent) are YSPU graduates. Currently there are 14,000 students studying at the university, the number of regular academic staff goes beyond 1000.

YSPU includes 10 faculties and 60 chairs. Education is carried out in 50 specializations of higher and post-graduate professional education. Extended educational courses are offered as well.

State Engineering University of Armenia


State Engineering University of Armenia (SEUA) is the legal successor of Yerevan Polytechnic Institute – one of the leading engineering schools of the former Soviet Union, the basic objective of which is to create and implement academic/research programs and services consonant with educational and technological needs of the national economy and society and to prepare students for life, career, lifelong learning and professional progress in line with changing economic environment.

Founded in 1933 with only two departments and 107 students, the institute grew along with the Republic’s industrialization pace and today has over 11,000 students and 1,000 full-time faculty members, most of them carrying doctoral degrees. SEUA today provides not only a modern technological education but also training in ICT, Foreign Languages, Social and Political Sciences, Business and Management. SEUA is also endeavoring to internationalize its Education and Science systems, share its experience and learn more from partners. SEUA has 3 branch campuses in Vanadzor, Gyumri and Kapan.

Yerevan State Conservatory


Founded in 1921 as a music Studio, the Yerevan Komitas State Conservatory (YSC) two years later was granted a status of higher musical education institution. The Conservatory was led by outstanding composer and conductor, Saint Petersburg Conservatory graduate Romanos Melikyan. YSC has 3 faculties that include Piano, Orchestra and Vocal-Theoretical. The Foreign students Department has existed since 1950s and includes students not only from the former USSR or neighbor countries, but also from China, Japan, Pakistan, Iraq, Germany, Yemen, Egypt and so on.

Today, the Conservatory has 150 professors, lecturers and assistant lecturers, many of them being international competitions’ prizewinners. YSC has a permanent student symphony orchestra, chamber and folk music orchestras, several different choirs and chamber ensembles.

Yerevan State Institute of Economics


Yerevan State Institute of Economics is one of the leading higher education institutions in Armenia. It’s located in a 3-storey building with a high ground floor. The architect of the building is Alexander Tamanyan.

The institute staff includes 41 Doctors of Science, professors, 130 PhDs, Associate professors, 40 Assistants, 32 Senior lecturers, 62 lecturers and 84 specialists. The institute includes the following departments – Management, Finance, General Economics, Engineering Economics, Commerce and Merchandizing. The institute’s scientific library features 197,300 storage units, out of which 80,200 are in Armenian. The five departments have 29 chairs. Considering the economic reforms the Armenian government and the Ministry of Science and Education have recently added the chairs of Management, State and Municipal Management, Insurance, Securities Market, Standardization and Certification, Business Management and Customs Service.

Russian-Armenian (Slavonic) University


The decision of opening a Russian-Armenian Slavonic University (RAU) in Armenia was made in 1997, and already two years later the university held its first intake of students. In 2002 RAU offered its first post-graduate course.

Presently, the university offers 11 faculties and 20 specializations:

Faculties – Applied Mathematics and Informatics, Economics, Foreign Languages & Area Studies, Law, Medicine & Biology, Political Science, Philology, Engineering & Technology, Psychology, Journalism and Tourism & Publicity.

Lectures are delivered by highly qualified specialists most of which hold Doctor’s or Candidate’s degree. To earn Bachelor’s Degree students have to study for 4 years, while the Master’s degree is earned within 2 years of study. Senior students have an opportunity to go on with their education in Russia.

Armenian State Agrarian University


Armenian State Agrarian University (ASAU) was established on May 6 in 1930 after a decision was passed to turn the Faculty of Agriculture of Yerevan State University into Agricultural Institute. The Institute is the only that trains and prepares specialists in this sphere.

ASAU includes 7 faculties and a number of specializations.
